About Us

Associação Alzheimer Açores is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) founded in 2006, with the mission of improving the well-being and quality of life of people with dementia and their families in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

It was created by a group of people who identified the need to develop specialised responses for people with dementia, while also ensuring support for their caregivers. Since its inception, it has counted on the support and collaboration of public entities.

Initially linked to Alzheimer Portugal, the association formally became independent on 18 October 2006. Its constitution and the approval of its statutes were published in the Official Journal, no. 13/2008, in July 2008.

In July 2007, the Centro Alzheimer S. Miguel - CASM, the association's first service, was inaugurated: a day-care service dedicated to the cognitive and functional stimulation of people with dementia in the early and intermediate stages.

The association's work is based on a person-centred approach, valuing the person beyond the diagnosis and guided by the principles of dignity, autonomy, respect and individuality. It operates on a community-based approach, developing local initiatives, awareness campaigns and information sessions, working together with public and private entities to promote networked collaboration aimed at creating integrated and diversified responses.

The association recently moved its headquarters to new premises — a long-cherished dream, the result of the vision, dedication and perseverance of its governing bodies, staff and partners. This milestone strengthens the association's capacity and commitment, continuing its daily work towards a more inclusive, informed and dementia-friendly society.
