The Centro Alzheimer S. Miguel (CASM) has been operating since 2007. It is a specialised daytime support service for people with dementia in the early and intermediate stages, designed to promote their well-being and quality of life while allowing them to remain in their family environment. It operates from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and has capacity for 18 clients.

We adopt a biopsychosocial, person-centred approach that respects each individual's identity, dignity and self-determination.

Our distinctive intervention focuses on developing abilities, autonomy and personal fulfilment, aiming to slow the progression of dementia and the associated cognitive decline, and to foster independence and functional autonomy.

Activities are defined according to each person's interests and motivations, providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes socialisation.

    Services Offered

    Stimulation activities
Cognitive, physical and social stimulation activities are provided, adapted to each person's abilities, interests and needs.
    Supervision and support
Permanent supervision is provided, along with support for the basic activities of daily living, such as feeding, hygiene and toileting.
    Meals
Meals include a morning snack, lunch and a varied afternoon snack, prepared under the guidance of a nutritionist. Lunch is supplied by a catering company.
    Transport
Transport is available in the Centre's adapted vehicle, subject to seat availability and limited to a 10 km radius.
    Daily communication with the family
Daily digital reports are sent to the family, with information on the client's condition, daily living activities and stimulation activities carried out.
    Periodic assessment
Periodic monitoring of the progression of dementia and adjustment of support to the client's abilities and needs.
    Transition support
Guidance and support towards more appropriate care responses, should the loss of capacities significantly compromise participation in CASM activities.

    Benefits

Attending CASM helps the person with dementia to remain socially active, stimulated and safe, contributes to slowing the progression of the disease and the eventual need for institutionalisation, and reduces the physical and emotional burden on caregivers.

    Application and Admission

Applications are made directly with the technical team, by appointment. The process is divided into two stages:

    1

    Anamnesis interview

Gathering of personal, clinical and functional history, identifying needs, problems and risk factors.

    2

    Brief interview with the candidate

Assessment of capacities and exploration of expectations regarding attendance.

Attendance involves a monthly co-payment equivalent to 25% of the income declared on the IRS tax return.

    Adaptation

Stimulation is more effective and longer-lasting the earlier it is started. Adaptation may not be immediate and some initial resistance is possible.

However, after a period of adjustment, most people respond positively and benefit from the activities offered. Experience shows that many clients find a renewed sense of purpose through attending the Centre. The role of the caregiver is essential in this process.
